Summary
This project focuses on the critical situation facing journalists and freedom of expression defenders in El Salvador. In a context where state institutions are controlled by the ruling party and there are no independent checks and balances, attacks against media outlets and communications professionals have intensified. Arbitrary arrests, smear campaigns, judicial and prosecutorial harassment, and stigmatization in public spaces are some of the practices that seek to silence those who investigate and denounce abuses of power. Cases like that of the newspaper The lighthouse clearly reflect these dynamics of repression and persecution.
The intervention aims to convey to Valencian society the urgency of denouncing these violations and demanding effective guarantees so that journalists and activists can carry out their work without fear of reprisals. Through awareness-raising activities, debate, and training, the initiative fosters the development of a critical citizenry aware of the importance of press freedom as a pillar of democracy and social justice. The involvement of Valencian society is key to demanding commitments to protection from political leaders and contributing to the implementation of real measures in El Salvador that safeguard the fundamental rights of those who practice journalism and defend human rights.
The project is also part of the 2030 Agenda and SDG 16, which promotes peace, justice, and the building of strong institutions. Promoting citizen participation, building solidarity networks, and raising awareness of the plight of human rights defenders become essential tools to ensure no one is left behind. From this perspective, the initiative seeks to raise awareness, mobilize commitments, and generate a positive impact both in the Valencian Community and in the protection of those fighting for freedom of expression in El Salvador.
