Summary
“Futures in freedom. Emotions on stage to integrate Art” This project aims to improve the mental health, emotional well-being, and reintegration opportunities of women incarcerated at the Valencia Penitentiary Center (Picassent). The project arose in response to the high incidence of mental health disorders, addictions, and experiences of gender-based violence among the female prison population, a particularly vulnerable and underrepresented group within the prison system whose specific needs are often overlooked.
The initiative proposes the creation of an artistic, safe and inclusive space through group workshops based on the methodology of Theatre of the Oppressed, Conceived as a therapeutic, social, and educational tool, the program involves 20 female inmates actively participating in theatrical creation processes over several sessions. These processes allow them to express emotions, work through personal and social conflicts, rebuild their identity, and strengthen their self-esteem, overcoming communication barriers and the isolation inherent in the prison environment.
Through techniques such as Forum Theatre and Theatre of the Oppressed, participants become the protagonists of their own stories, rehearsing alternatives and solutions to situations of oppression related to gender, violence, addiction, or social exclusion. This approach fosters resilience, personal empowerment, empathy, and critical thinking, while strengthening key social skills for life in freedom and contributing to the prevention of recidivism.
