Program Description
The Morning School is an initiative of the Foundation for Justice (FxJ) that aims to reduce the risk of social exclusion for highly vulnerable children in the Nazaret neighborhood of Valencia, by comprehensively addressing their developmental needs and supporting their caregivers and families. The project is implemented at the Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados School, located in one of the city's neighborhoods with the highest rates of poverty, school dropout, and educational segregation.
The intervention stems from a clear observation: without sustained attention to the living conditions, learning, and emotional well-being of vulnerable children, school dropout and social exclusion are perpetuated. Therefore, the Escoleta offers a safe and structured environment every morning, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., combining attention to basic needs, recreational activities, psycho-emotional support, and family accompaniment. All of this aims to reduce early school leaving rates, improve academic performance, and foster coexistence and cultural integration, acting preventively against the factors that lead to educational exclusion.
The program is structured around four complementary areas:
- Meeting basic needs through balanced breakfasts and daily hygiene routines as a reinforcement of healthy habits and school attendance.
- Educational, recreational, sporting and artistic activities that promote self-esteem, coexistence and a culture of peace.
- Support for caregivers, with training and individual meetings that strengthen their caregiving skills and educational guidance.
- Psychological support, with individual and group care provided by specialized professionals.
Since its inception in the 2013/14 academic year, the project has provided support to approximately 220 minors, who have improved their academic performance, significantly reduced their absenteeism, and acquired personal and emotional tools to cope with situations of conflict and exclusion. Furthermore, the project has established a collaborative network with the school, Cáritas, other social organizations in the neighborhood, and a stable team of volunteers.
