Creating audio documents: an empowerment project for female inmates at the Picassent centre
Fundación por la Justicia, in collaboration with several entities and with funding from Valencia City Council through the Department of Social Services, has launched a project for women deprived of their freedom at the Picassent penitentiary. This project focuses on the creation of audio documents, a space where participants can tell their stories and give voice to their personal experiences through the creation of an audio documentary.
The initiative aims to aim to foster artistic expression and the empowerment of female inmates, facilitating their social integration and helping to make their often invisible reality visible. The project not only offers them a means of creative expression, but also a space for collaboration and joint reflection.
Main Activities:
- Creation and strengthening of the working group: A working group is established, made up of the collaborating professionals and the project participants. Through dynamics of knowledge and connection, an atmosphere of trust and camaraderie is generated that will facilitate the entire creative process. This activity will be carried out in two sessions of two hours each, led by experts in Theatre of the Oppressed, Paula Sánchez and Lidia Hervás.
- Artistic creation workshops: Forum Theatre: Forum Theatre techniques are explored, where female inmates will create their own plays, based on their experiences and perspectives.
- Representation of the play: After the entire creative process, the participants will carry out a final performance of the developed works, in a rehearsal session and a performance in the penitentiary center.
- Artistic creation workshops: Sound documentary: In this workshop, participating women will have the opportunity to tell their stories through a sound product. Together they will decide on the themes and how to construct a collective narrative.
- Screening of the Sound Documentary: After the recording of the stories and post-production, the participants will watch the final result of the documentary, thus closing the workshop cycle. The possibility of sharing the documentary with the rest of the inmates and exhibiting the final product will be considered.
- Campaign to promote the audio documentary: To give visibility to the project and break stereotypes towards people deprived of liberty, a campaign will be carried out to disseminate the audio documentary produced. This work will be shared both with society and with other inmates, promoting understanding and respect for the experiences lived by the participants.
A Transformative Project
This project not only offers a space for the personal expression of female prisoners, but also promotes their personal and collective development. By sharing their stories in documentary format, participants will have the opportunity to reflect their vision of the world, contributing to the construction of a more empathetic and understanding society. With the support of the professional team and collaborating entities, this project offers a powerful tool for rehabilitation and social reintegration, giving visibility and voice to women who are often forgotten.
