Humans Fest opens its 15th edition this Thursday, which will be held until June 8, including screenings in theaters and neighborhoods, as well as multiple discussions
The Valencia International Film and Human Rights Festival, Humans Fest, organized by Fundación por la Justicia since 2009, has inaugurated the exhibition in the Tabacalera Building (C/ Amadeo de Saboya, 11) “African activism against climate change”, Realized by three Valencian journalists: Soraya Aybar, David Soler and Pablo Garrigós, the latter author of the photographs. All three have portrayed the struggle of African activists for human rights in general and socio-environmental rights in particular.
This photographic exhibition, organized in collaboration with the University of Valencia and the Department of Equality of the Valencia City Council, goes hand in hand with the journalistic investigation that the three published in the media Africa World so the images are accompanied by testimonies and personal stories about how to work against climate change under the threat of multinational corporations.
This is the case of the French oil company Total Energies, which leads the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project, a 1,443 kilometer pipeline between Uganda and Tanzania to export 6.5 billion barrels out of Africa. With an estimated production of 34 million tons of CO₂ per year, this pipeline will double the current emissions of these countries, for which it has been strongly confronted by local activists y environmental organizations, since it endangers the fight against climate change and fails to comply with the Paris Agreements.
This story is complemented, in turn, with images that prove the environmental impact and in habitat in endangered native Rothschild giraffe populations, chimpanzee communities, as well as mangrove forests and the African barrier reef. All of this is the result of a journalistic investigation that took place between September and October 2022.
The opening ceremony of this exhibition took place in the Tabacalera Building itself, where it will remain until June 16 with free entry, and was attended by María Dolores Pitarch, delegate of the rector for the Universitat-Societat program; David Soler, curator of the exhibition; Ferran Senent, head of the Social Inclusion and Coexistence section of the Valencia City Council; José María Tomás y Tío, president of the Foundation for Justice; and Majo Siscar, director of the Humans Fest.
